Mooney viscosity measures the resistance of rubber to flow under shear in controlled conditions, providing a standardised and reliable indication of processability.

A rubber sample is placed in a heated chamber and rotated at a constant speed using a serrated rotor. The torque required is measured and reported as a Mooney value.

For natural rubber it reflects molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and degree of mastication, supporting raw material grading and consistency in accordance with international TSR standards.

For uncured compounds it reflects how formulation and processing affect flow behaviour during manufacturing. A variant of the test measures the onset of vulcanisation (scorch time), indicating how long a compound can be processed safely before curing begins.
