Wallace began as general engineers in 1901 working for local Croydon companies and successfully developed a range of machines for the confectionery and food canning industries.
In the late 1930's Wallace became involved in joint development programmes with the Rubber and Plastics Research Association and undertook the design, manufacture and sales of test equipment to evaluate the physical properties of rubber and other polymeric materials.
In the early 1950's Wallace began looking for export markets for its test equipment particularly in the rubber growing regions and in industrialised countries where rubber processing takes place. Since then, export business grew rapidly and now accounts for nearly 80% of our product output (65-70% of turnover) which is sold to over 60 countries worldwide.
A large part of our export business is conducted through distributors and agents. In order to ensure that the Wallace brand is kept at the core of their business activities, regular contact is maintained. In 1999 Wallace held their first Dealer Conference, which attracted over 20 distributors and agents from all over the world. The conference provided delegates with an increased knowledge of Wallace products from the sales, marketing and service aspects. The event was a great success.
Wallace was part of Elektron Technology until 2016 when it was bought by C&M Projects Limited. C&M is the holding company of both Hancock & Sell Limited, which has been building the P14 Plastimeter and O14 Curing Oven for a number of years, and of Tenon Engineering Limited, which has been in the precision engineering business since the 1970s.
C&M’s strengths are in our wide range of machining and sheet metal processes, component assembly and testing, design and project management and supply chain consolidation and management. Our aim is to provide our customers with the highest quality products at an exceptional level of service, supplied on time.
Customer after sales support is critical. Wallace have a Service Team in the UK and most Wallace distributors and agents carry out service back-up themselves with support from technical staff. We also provide new product and service training both at Dorking and at the distributor's and agent's premises.
Our Sales team, along with other staff, frequently travel overseas, visiting agents, distributors and their customers. We exhibit at most of the major international exhibitions worldwide. We also regularly advertise in international magazines, which specialise in the rubber industry.
Accurate Testing - Measured Solutions
Over the last few years, we have prepared and presented several technical papers associated with hardness and plasticity at international conferences as well as having some of these published in international magazines.
Through close contact with customers, research associations and our membership of international standards committees (eg BS and ASTM), we are active in devising new world standards for particular types of rubber testing. This provides Wallace with a very competitive edge when introducing new test equipment.
